What is Perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, when the ovaries gradually begin producing less estrogen and progesterone. This stage often begins between the ages of 35 and 50 and can last anywhere from a few years to a decade.
Hormone fluctuations during this time can trigger a wide range of symptoms that may come and go unpredictably. Many women begin noticing changes long before their periods stop completely.
What is Menopause?
Menopause is officially defined as 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. At this stage, reproductive hormone levels stabilize at a lower level, and menstruation permanently ends.
While menopause is a normal biological process, the symptoms associated with hormonal changes can significantly impact daily life, relationships, work performance, and overall wellbeing.
Looking beyond symptoms
Menopause is also associated with changes in long-term health risks. As estrogen levels decline, women may experience an increased risk of:
Cardiovascular disease
High cholesterol
Type 2 diabetes
Osteoporosis and bone loss
Anxiety and depression
Cognitive decline and dementia
Understanding these risks allows us to take a proactive approach to supporting your health now and in the years ahead.
How Naturopathic Medicine can help
We take a whole-person approach to menopause care. Rather than focusing on a single symptom, we look at the factors influencing your health, including hormones, nutrition, stress, sleep, metabolism, and lifestyle.
-
We begin with a detailed review of your symptoms, health history, and goals. Depending on your needs, we may recommend laboratory testing to evaluate:
Hormone levels
Thyroid function
Blood sugar and insulin regulation
Cholesterol and cardiovascular risk factors
Vitamin and mineral deficiencies
Other contributing health concerns
-
Small changes can have a significant impact on symptoms and long-term health.
We provide individualized guidance on:
Blood sugar balance
Anti-inflammatory nutrition
Healthy weight management
Exercise and strength training
Bone health support
Sleep optimization
Stress management
-
When appropriate, evidence-informed supplements and botanical medicines may be used to support:
Hot flashes and night sweats
Mood and emotional wellbeing
Sleep quality
Energy levels
Cognitive function
Hormonal balance
Recommendations are tailored to your unique symptoms, health history, and goals.
-
Hormonal changes can affect emotional wellbeing just as much as physical health. Chronic stress can also worsen many menopause symptoms.
We may recommend strategies such as:
Mindfulness and relaxation techniques
Breathing exercises
Lifestyle modifications
Counselling or mental health support when appropriate
-
For some women, bioidentical hormone therapy may be an appropriate treatment option.
Bioidentical hormones are designed to be structurally similar to the hormones naturally produced by the body and may help relieve symptoms such as:
Hot flashes
Night sweats
Sleep disturbances
Vaginal dryness
Mood changes
